Young Modulus of a Wire

Choose a wire, load it with masses, and watch it stretch. Record your own readings, then plot Force against Extension by hand (or in a spreadsheet) to find the gradient and calculate the Young modulus — exactly as you would with the real apparatus.

Movement shown magnified for visibility — recorded values are true to physics.

Recorded readings

#Mass (g)Force, F (N)Extension, e (mm)

Add mass with the load buttons, let the reading settle, then press "Record data point" to add a row. Rows shown in amber were taken beyond the elastic limit — don't use these when calculating your gradient.

Check your Young modulus calculation

Plot Force (y-axis) against Extension (x-axis) from your table, draw a line of best fit through the elastic (straight-line) points, and measure its gradient. Since e = FL / (AE), the gradient of this graph is ΔF/Δe = AE/L, so:

E = gradient × L / A
